“Would you like you lose a stone in 3 weeks?”
“Dance your way to the beach body you have always dreamed of.”
How does all that sound? Enticing? Exciting? Just what you need after a month of December indulgence? I agree. What better way to start your new year than to embark on a new health and fitness regime that will see you slender and toned for the summer holidays.
The truth is we will soon be bombarded with all these messages across the media.
As a fitness professional I want to hide in the nearest gym and not come out again until Easter (if I can get a free machine in January that is!). The pressure and sensationalism of fitness and weight loss by the media drives me crazy. Don’t get me wrong, it can be the start of something great for most of us. Helping is get on the straight and narrow after our indulgence and making us feel better about ourselves. What I have a problem with is the message that they give vulnerable people.
The truth of the matter is this:
Weight loss, although scientifically very simple, emotionally is extremely hard. There are so many factors affecting how and when we can shift these pounds it would make your head spin.
What these media messages are conveying is that THEIR way is the easiest way. And yes, having a shake for breakfast, one for lunch and a “proper” dinner WILL work. This will work in restricting your calories and you WILL lose weight. But the first opportunity you get to go out for lunch what will you do? Take your shake with you? Tell your friends that you cannot eat because you are on a regime? No you will most probably talk yourself into enjoying yourself because you deserve it after being so restrictive. And why not? Life is for living after all. The problem is just that. Life. Things will always happen and if you have food (or lack of) to worry about then that is added stress and pressure on your life.
So please before you embark on a health and fitness journey, have a good think. If you think you can sustain that plan for the REST OF YOUR LIFE then yes by all means go ahead and invest. If not, then have a think about what you can sustain.
